Skilled Independent Visa — Subclass 189
Subclass 189 is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, family member, or state/territory government. Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and receive an invitation to apply.

Points test and SkillSelect
Applicants must score at least 65 points and submit an EOI through SkillSelect. Home Affairs invites the highest-scoring candidates from the pool in draw rounds. Higher scores improve competitiveness but do not guarantee an invitation.
Skills assessment requirement
Before submitting an EOI, applicants must obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority for their nominated occupation.
No nomination required
Unlike Subclass 190 and 491, the Subclass 189 does not require state/territory nomination or employer sponsorship. The visa is based purely on the applicant meeting the points threshold and receiving an invitation.
Family inclusion
A partner and dependent children can be included in a Subclass 189 application. Family members must meet health and character requirements.
