Subclass 491 is a five-year provisional visa for skilled workers nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member in a designated regional area. It can lead to permanent residence through Subclass 191.

Regional obligations
Holders must live and work in a designated regional area of Australia for the duration of the visa. This is a legal condition. Metropolitan areas such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Perth do not qualify.
Pathway to permanent residence
After three years of living and working in a regional area and meeting income requirements, Subclass 491 holders may be eligible to apply for Subclass 191 permanent residence.
Family sponsorship stream
Eligible family members living in a designated regional area of Australia can also sponsor relatives for the 491 visa, without the need for state or territory nomination.
