Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa
From August 24, 2026, the Skilled Migrant Category includes three pathways: Points-Based, Skilled Work Experience, and Trades and Technician. Each recognizes a different combination of qualifications, registration, income, employment, or New Zealand work experience.

Points-Based pathway
Designed for highly skilled people who score enough points based on qualifications, skilled employment, registration, and other factors. A minimum points threshold must be met.
Skilled Work Experience pathway
For people with qualifying skilled New Zealand work experience who meet income and employment standards under the current rules.
Trades and Technician pathway
Recognizes trade and technical workers with qualifying New Zealand employment, registration where required, and income meeting current thresholds.
General requirements
All three pathways require meeting health, character, and English language requirements. The specific thresholds and accepted tests vary by pathway.
