SEVP and I-20
Schools must be approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to enrol international students. An I-20 is issued by the school and is required for the visa application.
OPT and STEM OPT
F-1 students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) — up to 12 months of work in their field after graduation. STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension.
Path to H-1B
Many international students on OPT are sponsored by their employer for an H-1B visa. The H-1B cap and lottery apply.
