Visit — Choose the Right Short-Stay Route

Visitor rules are based on what you plan to do, how long you intend to stay, your nationality, and the destination. Tourism, family visits, business meetings, short study, and transit can fall under different rules even when they use the same visitor category.

General information only. Requirements change. The relevant authority makes the final decision.

Know the purpose before applying

Visitor categories have permitted activity lists. Doing something outside those permitted activities — such as taking paid employment during a tourism visit — can create serious immigration consequences.

Electronic travel authorizations

Many visa-exempt nationals still need an ETA, eTA, ESTA, NZeTA, or UK ETA before travel. These are not the same as visas but must be obtained before boarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work on a visitor visa?

No. Visitor visas do not permit employment in the destination country. Taking paid work on a visitor visa violates the visa conditions and can lead to serious consequences.

How long can I stay on a visitor visa?

Standard visitor stays are typically 90 days or 6 months depending on the country. The border officer determines the actual length of stay at entry.
