Work in Europe

European work permits vary significantly by country. Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands each have their own employer-sponsored, high-skill, and job-search routes. The EU Blue Card provides a common framework but is implemented differently in each member state.

General information only. Country-specific rules change.

No single EU work permit

There is no single European work permit for all of the EU. Each member state controls its own immigration for non-EU nationals. The EU Blue Card is a common high-skill framework but is still issued and governed at country level.

Germany routes

Germany offers the Opportunity Card (job search), EU Blue Card, qualified professionals work visa, experience-based route, recognition partnership, and IT professionals route.

Austria and Netherlands

Austria's Red-White-Red Card is a points-based system. The Netherlands Knowledge Migrant (Kennismigrant) route is the primary skilled worker pathway, supplemented by the EU Blue Card and Orientation Year for graduates.
